It's those kinds of decisions that are the reason why we are so willing to throw Ariens under the bus and not coach LeBeau.

My biggest complaint about Arians:

Failed plays get run again and again with the same results. Successful plays get filed away not to be seen or heard from again for weeks, even months.

my biggest problem is he 75% of the time tips his hand to what the play call is going to be ...

if we know what he is going to do before he does it the oppositions DC dam sure knows as well as his Def ...far easier to stop what you know is coming than it is when you have not a clue ....

4 and 5 wide empty back sets on 3rd and short ....

3 TE sets .....

all empty back sets ....

:headsmash:

My biggest gripe with him is his refusal to utilize a true FB. I mean, is it any coincidence that we had a successful running game when we had the likes of Dan Kreider, Jon Witman, John L. Williams, Tim Lester, and Merril Hoge?? Hopefully Summers can get his head out of his azz this season (and stay healthy) and become the next in that line of successful FB's.
The Steelers were named after the American Steel Workers - the men who helped to build America. The Browns were named after Paul Brown - the man who helped to build...the Bengals. hahaha

Apparently Ariens never heard of the saying, "doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is insane."

A couple of observations:

1. Gotta love the smirk in the picture of Arians in the linked article. Arrogant ass.

2. Let's assume that he gets the Raiders job. Who does Pittsburgh go after?

3. What happens if the offense is significantly worse next year under a new coordinator? In other words what is the metric for "improvement" w/ a new coordinator? Improved efficiency stats? A general pleasing hum emanating from message boards across the land? The insertion of a fullback? I guess what I am getting at is the devil you know better than the one you don't?

That's for Art Rooney II and Kevin Colbert to decide. As a fan I want to see this team return to being a very physical one. I can't stand this watered down version. Ariens can't leave fast enough for me.

i hate to say it, but could the offensive playcalling have been much worse? or predictable for that matter?

I've speculated Arians could be in the running somewhere. Remember when the Steelers curiously did not axe Mularkey after 2003. The, out of nowhere it seemed he got the BUF job.

We should be so lucky...

The problems this team had on def many times IMO can be directly connected to the lack of sustained drives by the O late in games many times ....

in fact 3 and out and an aged def late in the game spells doom more often than not regardless if your considered a top tier def or bottom tier one ....

many many times we dropped back and chucked 3 balls downfield and punted to put the def back on the field when the Steelers of old would have ran the ball on first and second down late in the game with a lead and then decided if run or pass was the better option on 3rd down based on distance and STILL may have run it to spite that yardage amount just to take an extra 40 seconds off the clock ..... You do not get that with Bruce he may run it once with a play that takes to much time to develop and then say well we couldn't run so we threw it ...

f#@& him I pray he is gone

I don't think that's an accurate assessment. Steelers were 3rd in the league in TOP, something like 12 seconds behind first.

Off the top of my head, the offense had at least 1 TD in Q4 with GB, KC, OAK and SD and the defense kept giving up long scoring drives immediately after. The offense definitely did not hold up their end in some other games.

The real culprit, IMO, was the soft defense sitting back with large cushions getting picked apart as they have in the past, only this time there was no Polamulu to contribute to a key play to get off the field. I know how solid the '08 defense was, but I remember a lot of tight games with teams driving for the tying score, holding my breath, and fortunately someone would step up to make a play.

The Q4 pass defense has serious issues that Troy may mask some, but it needs major work.

I think it is accurate ... many many times we could have ate more clock than we did .... how many seconds per game would it have taken to have secured a couple more wins and be a playoff team right now ?

I can name a few games where we win if we convert 1 more first down at pretty much any point in the second half .... just because your close to the league lead in ToP does not mean you should not or could not have been much better :OK:
